[News] Full Fact is battling AI-generated elections content with AI tools of its own

Full Fact, the UK’s independent fact‑checking nonprofit, is turning the tide against AI‑generated election content by deploying its own AI suite. When a Scottish candidate posted “illustrative” AI‑created campaign videos, Full Fact’s AI team used machine‑learning tools to monitor over a thousand social‑media accounts, transcribe videos, and match claims against existing fact‑checks. By scanning 16,514 images and videos for Google’s SynthID watermark, they flagged 136 AI‑generated pieces, including the suspect Glasgow video, and uncovered misleading claims such as a false youth‑unemployment statistic. Integrated into the newsroom workflow, these tools process roughly a third of a million sentences daily and feed alerts to journalists via Slack, enabling a small staff to cover far more ground. Post‑election analysis of 33,000 posts revealed topic trends, demonstrating how AI can both detect synthetic media and enhance large‑scale political monitoring.
