U Mobile has entered into a strategic collaboration with OpenAI to introduce artificial intelligence across its internal operations, customer-facing services, enterprise activities, network management, and cybersecurity.
The Malaysian telecommunications company said the agreement will give it early access to OpenAI’s latest frontier models. The two companies plan to develop and test AI applications across several parts of U Mobile’s business, with Amazon Web Services providing cloud infrastructure and technical support.
Initial work will cover internal process automation, software development, data analytics, and data science. U Mobile also plans to assess the use of AI in network operations, cybersecurity, brand activities, and digital content.
The announcement does not identify which OpenAI models U Mobile will initially deploy, provide a rollout timeline, or disclose investment figures for the collaboration. It also does not specify which applications will move from testing into production first.
The collaboration forms part of U Mobile’s plan to operate as an AI-enabled telecommunications provider. The company is building a next-generation 5G network in Malaysia and intends to combine its network infrastructure with AI tools used across operational and commercial functions.
“At U Mobile, we believe AI is most powerful when it amplifies human potential,” U Mobile Chief Information Officer Neil Tomkinson said. He said the company intends to use AI to support employees in areas including decision-making and day-to-day work.
OpenAI described the agreement as its first collaboration with a telecommunications provider in Malaysia.
“Together with U Mobile and our partners at AWS, we will look at how AI can support every part of U Mobile’s business from helping its people work more effectively and creating better customer experiences to enabling businesses to innovate and strengthen cybersecurity,” OpenAI Head of Mid-Market GTM for Asia Pacific Fred Groen said.
AI moves into network operations
U Mobile has not disclosed which network-management functions it intends to automate or support with OpenAI models. The GSMA identifies network lifecycle automation, resource management, and security among the areas where telecom operators are applying AI, with use cases including traffic prediction, fault identification, predictive maintenance, and dynamic allocation of network resources.
OpenAI has also documented Deutsche Telekom’s use of AI with several technology partners to adjust mobile-network resources as demand changes during the day. U Mobile has not indicated whether similar network-management applications will form part of its deployment.
AWS will provide cloud infrastructure and technical expertise for AI applications developed under the collaboration. Its role will include supporting the development and scaling of applications powered by OpenAI models.
OpenAI models are also available through Amazon Bedrock, AWS’s managed service for building and running generative AI applications. The announcement does not state whether U Mobile deployments under the collaboration will use Bedrock or disclose the technical architecture it plans to adopt.
AWS separately lists network troubleshooting among its generative AI applications for telecommunications operators, including fault detection, problem diagnosis, recommended corrective actions, software development, and testing.
OpenAI joins U Mobile’s enterprise AI platform
The agreement also extends to U Mobile’s enterprise activities. OpenAI will become an anchor partner of the telco’s Enterprise Innovation Platform, which is designed for businesses, startups, developers, and academic institutions to develop, test, and validate AI applications.
U Mobile introduced the Enterprise Innovation Platform in January 2026, with AWS, Huawei Malaysia, Palo Alto Networks, and Qualcomm among its initial technology partners.
The company officially launched the physical EIP Hub on August 6, 2026. Built around U Mobile’s 5G-Advanced infrastructure, the facility provides an environment where organisations can develop, test, and demonstrate applications before wider deployment.
Applications demonstrated at the hub’s launch included AI-based visual monitoring, digital twins using 5G, IoT and AI for asset management, 5G-connected drones for inspection and surveillance, and robotics. U Mobile said the facility will also support proofs of concept, validation work, and pilot programmes.
OpenAI will join the existing group of EIP anchor partners, with its frontier models available for businesses, startups, developers, and academic institutions to explore through the platform. U Mobile has said the wider platform is open to enterprises, SMEs, startups, academia, and public-sector organisations, including organisations that are not existing U Mobile customers.
U Mobile and OpenAI will also explore future AI-based products, services, and partnerships aimed at consumers and businesses. No specific products, launch dates, or commercial terms were disclosed.
Cybersecurity is another area covered by the agreement. The companies plan to examine the use of AI for threat detection, incident response, and cyber resilience, alongside measures for the secure deployment of AI within U Mobile and its enterprise ecosystem.
OpenAI has been developing cybersecurity capabilities for tasks including vulnerability discovery, analysis, patch development, testing, and remediation. OpenAI’s GPT-5.5-Cyber is designed to analyse large codebases, identify security-relevant components, validate potential vulnerabilities, and support the development and testing of patches.
The announcement does not state which OpenAI cybersecurity models or tools U Mobile intends to use. Palo Alto Networks is already among the technology partners involved in U Mobile’s Enterprise Innovation Platform, although no joint cybersecurity project involving U Mobile, OpenAI, and Palo Alto Networks has been announced.
The announcement also does not disclose performance targets, projected cost savings, deployment volumes, or dates for commercial AI services arising from the OpenAI collaboration.
U Mobile Chief Executive Officer Wong Heang Tuck and OpenAI’s Groen marked the launch of the collaboration at an event attended by Malaysia’s Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil. U Mobile Chief Information Officer Tomkinson and Chief Technology Officer Woon Ooi Yuen also attended.
