[News] When news moves inside AI

NewsConnect, an initiative by German regional publisher Ippen, lets news outlets embed, manage and monitor their content directly inside AI platforms such as ChatGPT, preserving branding, attribution and interactivity. The product emerges as search referrals dwindle—small publishers have lost up to 60 % of traffic over two years—while AI‑driven queries surge, creating a distribution gap that traditional links can’t fill. By turning articles into structured, interactive AI‑native apps, NewsConnect shifts journalism from a passive information source to a utility‑focused experience where users can query, compare, translate and act on news within the conversational flow. It treats attribution as a product challenge, leverages archives as contextual knowledge, and positions AI as a new distribution channel. Yet publishers still face platform dependence, uncertain discovery, data ownership and monetisation when the audience remains inside the AI ecosystem.
