Equinix expands AI infrastructure push involving NVIDIA, Together AI, AWS and Google Cloud

Equinix has introduced two services for distributed enterprise AI infrastructure, covering AI inference and managed connectivity across cloud, network, and AI environments.

The two announcements, made at Equinix Horizon, include Equinix Inference Exchange, developed with NVIDIA and Together AI, and Equinix Fabric One, a managed connectivity service that uses open specifications developed by AWS and Google Cloud.

Expanding AI inference infrastructure

Equinix said Inference Exchange will allow enterprises to deploy AI inference closer to their data, applications, and users across multiple locations. The service will be delivered through Equinix data centres and connected through Equinix Fabric.

The offering combines NVIDIA Enterprise Reference Architectures with Together AI’s inference platform, which Equinix said supports more than 200 open-source models. Together AI will provide both multitenant deployments and dedicated single-tenant environments for workloads that require separate capacity.

NVIDIA’s Enterprise Reference Architectures provide infrastructure designs covering compute, networking, storage, and software for production AI environments.

Equinix will provide power, cooling, and operational support for the underlying infrastructure. NVIDIA will contribute its Enterprise Reference Architectures and AI infrastructure, while Together AI will run the inference platform.

Together AI supports shared inference infrastructure as well as dedicated deployments with reserved GPU capacity.

Adaire Fox-Martin, CEO and president of Equinix, said the company is combining its existing relationship with NVIDIA with Together AI’s open-model platform.

“Our longtime relationship with NVIDIA delivers the accelerated computing foundation at the heart of modern AI,” Fox-Martin said.

The NVIDIA relationship predates Inference Exchange. In January 2024, Equinix introduced a managed private cloud service that allowed enterprises to deploy privately owned NVIDIA DGX AI infrastructure in Equinix data centres.

The service combined NVIDIA DGX systems, networking, and NVIDIA AI Enterprise software, with Equinix managing the infrastructure.

Equinix said Inference Exchange is intended to support AI workloads distributed across different providers and locations. Customers will be able to connect inference deployments to cloud platforms, networks, data sources, and other AI providers through its existing interconnection infrastructure.

The company also identified metro edge inference, open-model migration, and sovereign AI deployments as use cases. Equinix said deployments can be placed in specific locations to support data residency and sovereignty requirements where applicable.

Equinix plans to make Inference Exchange available from the first quarter of 2027.

Automating cloud and AI connectivity

The second service, Equinix Fabric One, focuses on connectivity between distributed cloud, AI, network, and enterprise environments. Equinix said the service will automate parts of network provisioning and management that would otherwise require customers to configure individual connections.

Customers will be able to specify connectivity requirements through a portal, APIs, automation workflows, agent-based requests, or natural-language prompts. Equinix said the service will manage functions including routing, cloud connectivity, encryption, resiliency, and failover.

“For decades, enterprise networks have been built one connection at a time for each partner and provider they depend on,” Chris Audie, chief product officer at Equinix, said.

IDC’s 2025 EMEA Enterprise Networking and Life-Cycle Services Survey found that most organisations were still balancing manual processes with newer network automation tools.

“Networking is still a key area of enterprise infrastructure that remains heavily dependent on manual design and operations,” Andrew Buss, senior research director at IDC, said in Equinix’s announcement.

Equinix named AWS and Google Cloud as lead integration partners for Fabric One. The service uses the OpenAPI 3.0 Interconnect specification developed through collaboration between the two cloud providers.

The publicly available Connection Coordinator specification defines a symmetric API for coordinating managed Layer 3 connectivity and can be implemented by other providers.

Robert Kennedy, vice president of AWS network services, said Fabric One builds on that work.

“Customers shouldn’t have to figure out how to connect across multiple clouds and AI environments on their own,” Kennedy said.

Google Cloud said Fabric One will integrate with its Cross-Cloud Network capabilities. Rob Enns, vice president of engineering for cloud networking at Google Cloud, said the company helped establish the open interconnect specification for multicloud networking.

Equinix said applications and AI agents will be able to request and provision connectivity programmatically through Fabric One. Customers will define their connectivity requirements, while the service handles the underlying routing and network configuration.

Equinix expects Fabric One to enter beta later in 2026, followed by general availability in 2027, initially in North America.

Equinix data centre footprint

Equinix operates more than 280 data centres across 77 metropolitan areas, with more than 230 cloud on-ramps and approximately 3,000 cloud and IT service providers across its network. According to the company, more than 10,500 businesses are interconnected through its infrastructure.

Equinix also said eight of the top 10 AI model providers and nine of the top 10 neoclouds have active deployments within its data centre network.
